A New Wave of Restrictions: Impact on Palestinian Lives and HLT's Work

Coinciding with the recent ceasefire in Gaza, Israel has imposed a sweeping blockade across the West Bank. This draconian measure includes the establishment of 898 checkpoints, severely restricting the movement of Palestinians. A staggering 173 iron gates have been erected, effectively cutting off Palestinian cities. Bethlehem Governorate alone faces the brunt of these restrictions, encircled by 89 of these gates, completely isolating its residents.
The Human Cost of Restriction
This unprecedented wave of restrictions is causing immense hardship for Palestinians. Students are unable to reach their schools and universities, employees are prevented from commuting to work, and farmers are cut off from their fields. The "Container" checkpoint, dividing the North and South of the West Bank, inflicts immense delays, with individuals often waiting for six hours or more. This single checkpoint alone can block access for an estimated 2,000 vehicles and 5,000 people, including students, elderly, patients, doctors, pregnant women, and countless others.

Impact on HLT's Work
These new restrictions pose significant challenges to Holy Land Trust's vital work. Our upcoming "Voices for Change" and "Generations" projects, both targeting university students, are at risk of being severely impacted. With restricted movement, students from Hebron and Jerusalem may be unable to participate, hindering the progress and effectiveness of these crucial initiatives.
Furthermore, HLT operates numerous projects in Area C, including Al-Walajeh, Jub El Dib, Masafer Yatta, Al-Khader, Battir, and many other villages. These restrictions will severely limit our ability to reach these communities, provide essential support, and respond to their urgent needs.
A Call to Action
We urge the international community to play a decisive role in ending the illegal Israeli occupation and restoring dignity to the Palestinian people who have endured decades of military oppression. The time has come for the world to unequivocally declare: "Yes, Palestinian lives matter."
What You Can Do:
-
Raise Awareness: Share this newsletter and information about the ongoing human rights crisis in the West Bank with your networks.
-
Contact Your Representatives: Urge your elected officials to condemn these restrictions and demand that Israel respect international law.
-
Support HLT's Work: Your contributions enable us to continue providing vital support to Palestinian communities despite these immense challenges.
Together, we can stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and work towards a just and lasting peace.

"Voices for Change" takes flight

Holy Land Trust recently hosted an introductory meeting for students at Bethlehem Bible College regarding the upcoming "Voices for Change" project. This exciting initiative, funded by the U.S. Office of Palestinian Affairs of the U.S. Embassy, will empower Palestinian university students aged 18-24 by fostering their leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
The "Voices for Change" project will equip young people with the tools they need to design and implement innovative youth initiatives that address pressing societal challenges and contribute to positive change within Palestinian communities. By engaging young people in decision-making processes and supporting their efforts through awareness campaigns and community-based projects, we aim to cultivate a generation of leaders who can build a future founded on hope and resilience.
The project is set to commence in February 2025 and promises to be a transformative experience for the participating students. We are excited to witness the positive impact these young leaders will have on their communities and the future of Palestine.
